4 Ways to Prepare for the Arrival of Your Newly Adopted Pet

A pet can be a wonderful addition to your family and provide you with unconditional love. They will be at your door wagging their tail the minute you come home. Unfortunately, there are a lot of animals that have been neglected, abused, and left to live out their days in a shelter. The good thing is you can make a difference and adopt one of those animals.

Because we have one of the best new and used car dealerships in Montgomery County and other areas, we at Piazza Subaru of Limerick want to do our part and give back. That is why we have joined the the cause and now support homeless animal adoption.

For those who are interested in supporting the cause, please consider adopting a pet from an SPCA location in Pennsylvania. If you do choose to adopt a pet, we would like to provide our customers with a few tips on how to prepare for the arrival of your adopted pet. The tips are listed below:

1.    Supplies Needed

Before you bring your new animal home you want to make sure you have all the new pet supplies. You should have food, bowls for water and food, a leash, a collar (if a dog) and bedding. Don't forget to get them an ID tag, which you can pick up from the shelter, and remember to bring the leash and collar with you when you pick them up at the shelter.

2.    First Day Home

There are going to be some first day jitters for your new pet, just like when you had your first day of school, but there are things you can do to prepare for this anxiousness. The first thing you want to do is show your new friend around your home and introduce them to the family members, food bowls, where they sleep, and the places to urinate. The second thing you want to introduce to your new pet is food. To prevent diarrhea and ease restless stomachs, you can mix boiled potatoes with the food. By gently easing your new animal into their new home, the anxiety they feel will eventually decrease.

3.    Adjustment Period

The first few weeks are when you and your pet get to know each other. The animal does not know what the daily schedule is, so gently introduce them to what life is like at your home. Be patient with your new friend and try not to leave them alone for long periods of time because they can become anxious and chew up your new favorite shoes.

4.    Things to Watch For

While your animal settles into your new home, they could experience restlessness and anxiety. This might cause them to drink an excessive amount of water, frequently urinate or have diarrhea. If any of these issues were to persist past a few days, it is important that you contact your veterinarian.

Adopting a pet is a great cause and will fill your home with joy and laughter. It is rewarding to rescue an animal that will show their gratitude by loving you unconditionally.
