How to Tell It's Time to Change Your Tires

Have you been wondering lately if you need to get new tires? Tire failure is responsible for almost 10,000 crashes a year, so it's important to make sure that yours are always safe. A quick tire inspection will let you know whether you're due for new ones or not. At Piazza Subaru, we take pride in offering some of the best used Subarus in Pennsylvania as well as high quality used cars in Limerick. We also want our customers to be safe, so we've created a checklist that will let you know if you need to change your tires.

One of the best ways to tell if you need new tires is the penny test. Simply place a penny into the tread of your tire and point Lincoln's head down. If you can see the top of his head when you look at the penny, then your tire treads are worn and shallow. Nowadays, many tires also have wear bars. These indicate that your tire tread is low when the tread pattern is worn down to the bar.

Do you hear vibrating or thumping sounds when you're driving? If you feel like something is trying to push you out from your seat, then you can bet that your back tires are unbalanced. Steering wheel vibration is also a good indicator that you have suspension issues. If your car is not riding smooth, and you experience any of these issues, then you'd be best off taking it in for new tires.

Bulges or cracks

If your tire is deflating, it will naturally start to bulge out on one side. Anything else that looks peculiar on your tires should tip you off, as well. Air leaks or low tire pressure are signs that you need to have your tires replaced, so make sure that you get your car serviced as soon as possible.

Temperature changes

In the winter, tire pressure drops in alignment with the temperature. An underinflated tire will generate excess heat and will also wear out quicker. Try to pay attention to whether your tires look like they are properly inflated or have someone check them out if you're unsure.
